Powerful Realization through Music
Music is healing oil for my soul.
It sets my course straight after getting turned around.
It seeks to draw me out of dark places.
Is like a perfect storm of powerful notes and truthful lyrics crashing against my weary soul.
My hearts resonates with the Psalmist David in this way. I can almost picture him lost in his own world singing songs of deepest hurt or greatest joys. Singing praises to God at times with no lyrics just the beat of his heart. The well of emotion at the words which cannot be formed as he is hit with the realization of Who God really is what He has really done. This realization is even more powerful for us on the other side of the cross.
One song which resonates within my soul right now is "How Love Wins" from The Story CD project. This song tells the story of the thief on the cross next to Jesus.
How Love Wins: lyrics by Nichole Nordeman, music by Bernie Herms
"My life began like any other man held beneath a mother's loving gaze
Somewhere between now and then I lost the man I could have been
Took everything that wasn't mine to take but Love believes that it is not too late
Only one of us deserves this cross, a suffering that should belong to me
Deep within this man I hang beside is the place where shame and grace collide
And it's beautiful agony that He believes it's not too late for me
"This is how Love wins, every single time
Climbing high upon a tree where someone else should die
This is how Love heals, the deepest part of you
Letting Himself bleed into the middle of your wounds
This is what Love says, standing at the door
You don't have to be who you've been before
Silenced by His voice, death can't speak again
This is how Love wins
"Did you see this moment from the start that we would drink this cup of suffering?
I wonder, did we ever meet? Childhood games in dusty streets
For all my many sorrows and regrets nothing could compare to just this one
That in the presence of my King I cannot fall upon my knees
I cannot carry You up to Your throne; You instead, will carry me back home.
"What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood, nothing but the blood
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood, nothing but the blood
Cause this is what Love says, standing at the door
You don't have to be who you've been before
And silenced by His voice, death can't speak again
This is how Love wins."
"The Story" is a CD I highly recommend. Not only is the music suburb, the portrayal of many characters in the Bible brings such a clarity and humanity which is often lost on me by reading the text alone. Each song holds so much meaning and connection. Each song resonates within my own heart depending on the particular circumstances. Each song tells the story of a person in Biblical history who encountered God and
was. never. the same. AGAIN!
Take a listen and see if your heart swells with the powerful realization of what God has done for each of us.
